What changes at Starter
The free plan answers from your docs. Paid plans answer from your data.
A docs trained bot escalates the moment someone asks about their own order. That question is the one your team spends its day on, and it is the one a database connection resolves.
It answers about this customer
Order status, subscription state, last invoice, shipment tracking. The agent fills parameters into a template you approved and reads the row.
It still cannot write SQL
Paying does not widen access. Sessions stay read-only, scoped to the tables you allowlist, capped at 20 rows with a 5 second statement timeout.
It cannot cross customers
Identity scoped lookups run only for visitors your server signed with an HMAC SHA256 token, so an anonymous chat cannot ask about someone else's account.

Do I need a credit card to start?
No. The free plan is $0 for as long as you want it, with no card on file: 50 messages a month, one agent, and a knowledge base. You only enter payment details when you upgrade to connect a database.
What counts as a message?
Every message in a conversation counts, so a visitor question and the agent's reply are two. A ten turn chat uses twenty of your monthly allowance. Your dashboard shows usage against the cap as it accrues.
What happens when I hit the monthly limit?
The agent stops replying until the window rolls over or you upgrade. You get a usage banner in the dashboard before you reach the cap, so it should not arrive as a surprise. Nothing is deleted and no overage is billed.
Do unused messages roll over?
No. The allowance resets at the start of each monthly window rather than accumulating.
Can I change or cancel my plan later?
Yes, from the billing portal in your workspace settings, at any time, without talking to anyone. Upgrades take effect immediately and downgrades take effect at the end of the period you already paid for.
Is there annual billing?
Not yet. Every plan is billed monthly today. If a yearly term is what your finance team needs, email us and we will sort it out directly.
Why is the database connector not on the free plan?
A database connection runs real infrastructure against your production system, and we would rather meter that honestly than fund it with a free tier that quietly degrades. The free plan is a complete docs grounded agent, not a countdown.
Who processes payments?
Polar handles checkout and subscriptions as merchant of record. Card numbers never reach our servers. Invoices and payment methods are managed in the same billing portal.
